Comprehensive Design Process
To determine the best use of the land for the homeowner I employ a series of collaborative, intellectual, and creative steps referred to as the “Design Process.” The design process provides a logical, organized framework for us to arrive at a finished site design.
Please note that the design process will vary from one design situation to the next so the process may be applied differently for each unique project.
The design process typically includes these steps:
Research / Analysis
Site Visit / Initial Appointment
At our initial appointment, I will gather as much input from your family as possible. We will discuss your thoughts about what is wanted, liked, and disliked. All family members are encouraged to participate in this initial interview so that I can program the space with everyone’s objectives in mind. A well-planned residential landscape directly benefits the members of the household by providing opportunities for enjoyable outdoor living activities. The vision of the household determines the functions to be accommodated on the site.
Define the budget for the project. Please keep in mind that the budget should not drive the design at this point because phases can be implemented over time if necessary.
Base Plan Preparation
If available, I will want to secure information from the homeowner such as architectural plans and plot surveys to aid in my inventory of the site. Once I have gathered this information, we will determine if a survey is required for your project. Then I will measure, photograph, and document the existing conditions.
Program Development
Project elements to be included in the design shall be defined. The goals and objectives of the project will be clearly defined to meet the design solution.
Project Elements may include but are not limited to driveways, patios, walkways, porches, decks, walls, swimming pools, spas, water features, outdoor structures, pergolas, trellises, fencing, outdoor kitchens, lighting, fireplaces, fire pits, bars, land art, irrigation, drainage solutions, rain gardens, native gardens, English gardens, French gardens, Japanese gardens, cutting gardens, kitchen gardens, and wildlife gardens.
Design
Concept Plan
This drawing is a study of the design possibilities of your site. We will discover how each of the design elements and spaces functions in relation to the land and one another.
Master Plan
The overall design is a refinement of the Concept Plan and will clarify what the project will actually look like. I will define the visual quality of the design by giving specifics on appearances, finishes, materials, plantings, and lighting.
3D Visualization
Some projects require a digital 3D model to convey the project to the homeowner and/or contractor. Site elements like structures, outdoor kitchens, water features, and decks can be explored at a more detailed level with this technology.
Construction Documentation
Once the design phase is completed, instructional documents and drawings are prepared for the contractor to build your project.
Implementation
Bid Assistance
Plans are made available to bid for recommended contractors with assistance to ensure the design intent is followed and bids are evaluated objectively.
Observation
Construction oversite will ensure your project follows the intended vision of the design. I will make suggestions as necessary and answer questions as they arise during construction.
Maintenance
I am committed to helping my client’s gardens grow into magnificent landscapes over time. Quality maintenance is essential to assure the design intent is retained over time. A maintenance calendar containing guidelines and recommendations customized to your site will provide the homeowner information needed to nurture your investment.
